Now what do I do with Josh Henson?

Dear Alan,
Not one to lightly gloss over the intellectual musings of one whose mind has survived a legal education, I should note from background research (from my Webster's "new" collegiate dictionary (c) 1953, which I have overused since we in college together, when men were men and expletives were deleted), the following definitions which seem a propose [sic] following my initial viewing of your blog spot:

Wise: v.t. (AS, wis.): To instruct...
Bard: n. (F: barde, fr. Sp., fr. Ar.): A piece of armor for a horse

Whether this is a subtle indication of your teaching method, or merely you horsing around, I write to add my congratulations to your bold new intellectual effort, marred only by one error [deleted out of regard for common decency]. If television has taught me anything, it is that any problem can be solved in less than 30 minutes (including commercials and at least one surprise twist). Keep that in mind. As Voltaire said, "any thought worth thinking is worth saying publicly..."

Regards,

Josh Henson
(also willing to be named, except in law suits).

PS Voltaire did not really say that. I just made it up.

[Actually Josh, I think it was, "any task worth doing is probably worth doing poorly"--one of my guidelines for producing this blog--TWB]

Bard Q & A (FFXI related)

This is a updated version.

Q: What is a Bard?
A: The Bard is a unique support class in FFXI.

Q: What does a Bard do in a party?
A: Many things actually. They can restore MP, HP, increase resistance to things such as Sleep, and other status aliments, increase evasion, and many other things. Can also weaken enemies with Thernody and Foe Requiem, these songs also drain the enemies hit points. Bard isn't much of a fighter though, so don't count on it healping much in the damage dealing department, and a word of the wise, bard doesn't take damage to well either, so be carful to not pull hate.

Q: How many songs does it have?
A: Over 70. It gets a new song almost every level.

Q: What songs are useful, and which aren't?
A: Bard has many a song, however, most will never get used in a party. It does however have many useful song though. Madrigal (Accuracy Up), Mambo (Evasion Up), Lullaby (Sleeps enemies), Finale (Dispel one helpful effect), Hunter's Prelude (Rangers like this), Learned Etude (Black Mages love Int. up), Spirited Etude (White Mage like this one for Mnd up), and Elegy (Slows the enemies down). The bard has plenty more songs like Shining Fantasia and Gold Capriccio (increase resistance to Blind and Petrafication), however songs such as these are hardly if ever used in a party. Mazurka is a fun but worthless spell, it increases your movement speed, but really doesn't make much of a difference in a party. Goddes Hymuns is niffy as it give everyone ReRaise I, but this is a lvl 75 spell, so it's usefulness is in question.

Q: What gear should a bard use?
A: Charisma boosting stuff, and a few things of MP boosting stuff is ok too. Chr. effects songs, and how long they last, and how well they stick. Chr, is useful for a Beast Master as well. Some other useful things to get but are most certainly not needed to enjoy the job. Monster Signa, Chr. +8 (camped heavily), Elegent Shield, Chr. +1 and MP +8, and the Swan Bilbo is a neat little sword, give agi -4, Chr. +4 and acc +4. These items are helpful, and there are still more that help as well, but trust me, you don't need this stuff, infact I just have the elegent shield, and I kick so much ass.

Q: What race is best at being bard?
A: Any. Bard is very race friendly. Anyone can be a good bard. Hume, Tarutaru, Galka, Elvaan, and Mithra, doesn't matter, bards a very easy job to play.

Q: What's the best sub job?
A: White Mage, and White Mage only. Alot of parties like when bards help with healing and trust me, whm as a sub really helps out. Although some like red mage, but other than fast cast, which really doesn't lower the casting time a whole lot, you will have atleast 20-30 less MP. I just prefer whm.

Q: What is better, Dispel or Magic Finale?
A: Dispel. Finale is good as well, but Finale's recast time is 24 seconds, while Dispel is only 10 seconds, so you can get off two dispels in the same time a bard can get off one Finale. Take it from me, when fighting infernal weapons in Ro'Maeve, which have a ton of buffs, that 20 seconds, makes a differnece. Although Apocalyptic weapons, aren't as bad, seeing as they are warrior class.

Q: Is Bard Artifact helpful?
A: Alot of people don't like it, but I think it is pretty useful. Not the best AF set, but it isn't awful.

More from the Web:

Her dreams became more and more restless. Hanging her head over her full belly she wept as quietly as she could, trying not to wake her husband ... now, so the husband of the beautiful Pei'ya and the son of the handsome and wise bard Bylan may sleep ... be the daughter of the handsome and wise bard Bylan..." He grunted in protest. She nudged him again.

And one more:

Für ewig (1820) Denn was der Mensch in seinen Erdeschranken Von hohem Glück mit Götternamen nennt: Die Harmonie der Treue, die kein Wanken, ... doubting care, The light which in stray thoughts alone can cheer The wise, the bard alone in visions fair...

[With any luck, that should put a definitive end to this potentially disruptive thread!-TWB]
